Rita, Rita, where are you going?!
My niece Sarah, her husband Joe and their almost 2-yr-old daughter Laura dragged in from Houston yesterday after a 17-hour car trip covering the 238 portal to portal miles – most of it endured without air conditioning in 100 degree heat, to save gas. Their Pearland (20 miles south of Houston) home was among the many under an evacuation order in preparation for the landing of Hurricane Rita. Rachel, Lois and Hannah rushed to greet Laura, who was calling, “Hannah! Hannah!” as she toddled up our steps. Oh, yeah, almost forgot, we were also happy to see….oh, what were their names again?…..oh, right, Joe and Sarah, of course. They were all glad for both a snack and a hot shower before tumbling onto clean, cool sheets.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch….some old friends from Houston found their way to this area and discovered the complete lack of hotel or motel rooms. So the parents and their teenaged son and daughter are also here. Rachel and the daughter, Kelly, were good friends in Brownies before we moved in 2000. We finally found a kennel this morning
with openings for their dog and cat. Let’s just say the neighbors all knew a dog was here last night.

The gyms at Rachel’s high school, Reagan, and at Lois’ middle school, Bush, are filling with Rita evacuees, as is the gym of Churchill Baptist, where our church continues to minister.
We only think we know what we’re doing tomorrow. Take care.
