‘Canes, Corsages and Cards

All our Houston/Pearland/Pt. Arthur-area company left by Tuesday, so, life has returned to normal (or what passes for it) at Casa Woodworth.  Thanks to all of you who asked about our guests.  The Pearland home of Sarah, Joe and Laura had no damage, though many other nearby residents were without power for almost a week.  The home of our Houston guests, the Vlaskamps, had no damage.  They were out of their house for almost a year after Allison, as it was gutted and rebuilt.  Our Pt. Arthur guest (nephew of neighbors, whose home was bursting with family)  could get no information about his home before setting out with a trunk stuffed with water bottles. Pt. Arthur was the hardest hit; he could only hope and pray.

And – thanks be to God! – our church’s shelter closed Tuesday at 6 p.m.  We served more than 200 special needs evacuees from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.  San Antonio is a beautiful city populated with generous and caring people.

Of all the blessings we’ve had since moving to here in January 2000, none surpass having our girls in excellent NEISD schools.  Friday night was Reagan High School’s homecoming.   Rachel got herself and Lois a corsage, but later decided that a trip to a “haunted house” downtown with a friend was preferable to fighting the crowds at the game.  I got a call around 11 p.m., “Mom, I just wanted you to know I survived, and I’ve never been so scared in my life!”  Reminds me of things I’ve said about corporate downsizing…

Mum's the Word

Mum's the Word

I saw several Reagan mums on Lois’ classmates at Bush Middle School, when I went to enjoy a “6B Parent” lunch with her Friday at noon.  What’s better than a sack of Sonic treats eaten under a portico with scores of parents, younger siblings and 6th graders?  Great opportunity to visit with her teachers, plus other parents from da hood.

Reagan hosts has a spacious public library, which, I am embarrassed to say, I’ve been meaning to join for five years and 10 months.  My mom got me a library card at age seven, in the “book mobile” parked outside an A&P grocery store.  We visited the book mobile every two weeks before Meyer Branch was built and we turned our fickle bibliophile affections toward it.   But, then again, she was a good mother.  -sigh-   So today I finally got us organized and over there, and we’re all carded now.
