Applause! Applause!
Continuing a tradition of excellence in theater, Hannah played Billie Holiday in the Stone Oak Elementary version of “We Gots Jazz” tonight. A fuzzy purple scarf “jazzed up” her standard choir outfit – very festive-looking as she recited her eight lines.
Notice Miss Billie’s braces, affixed this week. Rachel in retainer – Lois and Hannah in braces – we should have a wing named after us at Monarch Dental.
It’s always fun to see your kids on stage – though seldom someone else’s. Rachel was Baby Jesus – or, as my mom said, “Baby Jesusette” – the Christmas she was six months old. Mary was a diminutive college student who unexpectedly had to sit down instead of pace with the blessed infant because 20-lb.Rachel was too large of a holy bundle to haul around stage. Lois was a molting sheep in a Christmas pagent a few years later. How was I to know the cotton balls I stuck to that white swim cap wouldn’t stay glued? And Hannah’s first theatrical performance? She played a sausage in “The Farmer in the Dell”. Seldom have I seen a pork product portrayed in that depth.
My big break came in sixth grade, when I played an Irish grandmother in a school play. I don’t remember much except a song about “fairy folk,” and that I brought a can of Mom’s Avon bath powder to dust in my hair to turn it white. A fellow performer threw up behind stage, so a teacher emptied the can of bath powder into the mess to stifle the aroma. All was well until a still-anonymous student switched on a gynormous back-stage fan. The powder did billow, the teacher did bellow and all of us sixth-graders tried to look innocent – definitely our finest performances of the evening.
Bravo! And hey – can I see your program?
