Every so often a book comes along and I think, “How did I miss this?” “Serena” had been out two years before I snapped up the paperback at Costco.
It’s the story of a truly evil woman who marries a captivated timber baron in North Carolina in 1929. I didn’t know anything about the lumber business – learned a lot. Particularly interesting to me were the descriptions of the workers’ homes, their food, their British-influenced language and their customs. It was like listening to my mother tell stories about her relatives in the hills of old Kentucky.
It’s a great story with a truly surprising ending. Absolutely worth a read. A gem.
